One Day Tour in Country Side of Hong Kong - Shing Mun Redoubt

Previous on ToGother: One Day Tour in Country Side of Hong Kong - Shing Mun Reservoir

Or you can walk a bit more to visit the underground London in just a few steps away.

Shing Mun Redoubt

How to get there?

Start with the Memorial Arch of MacLehose Trail Section 6 at Barbeque Site No.5, then you will arrive the attraction after a walk for around 10 minutes.

Still too difficult to locate? Don’t worry fam, I’ve marked the routes and pinned down in the map for you!

Please note that I have marked the starting point at the Shing Mun Country Park Visitor Centre, so you will need to walk for 25 minutes to get there, and if you are somewhere else, please kindly adjust and evaluate the distance and time you may need to spend to get there.

 Shing Mun Redoubt

Actually, it’s the Shing Mun Redoubt that built in early 20 centuries. All the areas of the Redoubt are named after the famous street name in London, E.g. Oxford Street, Regent Street, Haymarket, and Shaftesbury Avenue and etc. The control room is named Strand Palace Hotel, according to Wikipedia; but cannot be found during my inspection.

You cannot find a theater in this Shaftesbury Avenue, but you can see the bullet holes in it.

 Shing Mun Redoubt

What does it feel to find some of the Great Britain’s most famous and well-known streets and attractions (of course only the name) in the middle of the mountain in Hong Kong? I don’t know, perhaps more than amazed because there are still lots of Colony Histories and affections remain in this ex-colony.

 Kowloon Reservoir

And if you still feel so desperately need to hike more, while you assure you still have enough fuel left in the tank, I would suggest you to walk all the way down the Kam Shan via MacLeHose Trail Section 6. You can also walk by FOUR Reservoirs during your walk, including Kowloon Reservoir, Kowloon Byewash Reservoir, Kowloon Reception Reservoir, and Shek Lei Pui Reservoir.

 Kowloon Resrvoir

By that, you can reach the Lai Chi Kwok/ Cheung Sha Wan MTR station in less than 2 hours, and eventually going back to your stay or go to the famous local Food Stalls at Sham Shui Po, and enjoy the well-known street foods.

On Yam Estate

But if you feel tired at the Redoubt, you can leave by following this route to On Yam Estate, which there would be plenty of bus routes and taxi lead you back to your destination. Or you can walk back to the Shing Mun Reservoir just to feel the freshness one more time before heading home.

And this is how it ends, after almost 6 hours of hiking. Hope you will truly admire the city planning in Hong Kong after knowing the city line and countryside are so close to each other. And help us to tell others that Hong Kong is not only having shopping malls and skyscrapers as our attractions. Help us to save the countryside from the demolition.
